Outfielder Nate McClouth was just informed that he signed a new 3 year,
$15.75M contract with the Pirates after waking up on the floor of his
apartment. According to McClouth, Pirates GM Neal Huntington asked him
out for drinks after practice but only "under the circumstances that
they were just friends". After Huntington suggested doing shots,
McClouth appeared reluctant but eventually surrendered to the idea
after Huntington already ordered a Soco and lime for himself and Wild
Turkey for McClouth. McClouth went on to say that "Huntington insisted
on doing shots of some really hard stuff, well he had me drinking the
Wild Turkey, I think he wanted me to get drunk really quick". After the
7th shot of the night, McClouth claims that he was going to call it a
night and went to use the restroom. Upon his return, Huntington had
ordered what he claimed to be a gin and tonic for McClouth. Nate went
on to say "The drink was really cloudy, it had a weird chemical taste
to it, but Dave was so insistant that I drink it all as fast as
possible. After that, I don't know, I don't remember what happened".
When interviewed, Bartender Mike Green said that Huntington was coming
onto McClouth all night and that after McClouth went to the restroom,
he thought he saw Huntington pour something into McClouth's drink.
McClouth then stated that he woke up on the floor of his apartment with
the new contract on his kitchen table. McClouth was set to begin
arbitration with the Pirates today but had every intention of asking
for a trade. Of the whole situation, McClouth said "I feel ashamed. He
said he was my friend and he took advantage of me." Before leaving for
practice, he added "It's probably my fault for leading him on like that
though". |
